What is the Offline Timeout Setting?
The Offline Timeout Setting is the time (in days) that an Avigilon Alta controller (ACU) can be offline before the token will expire. This setting is important because while the token is still active, the ACU will permit some access at affected Avigilon Alta readers, including potentially recently revoked credentials. Once the token expires, mobile credentials will only work under limited conditions, and Cloud Key and card credentials will not authenticate at all.
For more convenience, you may opt for a longer Offline Timeout Setting, so users can continue to access entries while the ACU is offline and the token is still active. For more security, you can opt for a shorter duration, as this will prevent any recently unauthorized users from gaining entry.
While the ACU is offline but before the token expires:
Card credentials will continue to authenticate.
Mobile credentials will authenticate, but only if the mobile device has:
Local network connectivity OR.
BLE connection to the Avigilon Alta reader.
Remote unlocks will not authenticate.
Cloud Key credentials (including guest passes) will not authenticate.
Communication between the ACU and Alta Access will be queued and delayed until connectivity is restored.
After the token expires:
All of the above, except:
Card credentials will no longer authenticate.
Mobile credentials will need Internet access periodically (to communicate to the Avigilon Alta cloud).
Once connectivity is restored to the ACU, all credential types will work and updates from Alta Access will propagate to the ACU.
To change the Offline Timeout Setting:
Go to https://control.openpath.com/login and log in. To access the European Alta Access, please go to https://control.eu.openpath.com/login.
Go to Administration > Account.
Under Security Settings, click Change Settings.
Enter the number of days that an ACU can be offline before credentials stop working. The maximum value for this setting is 30 days.
To be notified when your ACU goes offline, refer to How do I set up alerts?
